Can't build a well?

I have stone working and have located a puddle to build a well on but the game doesn't give me the option to build one. It should be under the stonework menu right? Do I need some other skill or am I missing some other obvious thing?

Discovering rope and bucket by making it perhaps. Having the item given to you isn't enough.

I haven't played this game since world four and i just remembered that rope isn't the same as string. I also haven't built a bucket on this dude yet. those are probably my problems.

Time to gather tap roots.
