just have to ask because I want to know...

I would like to start mining, but am curious whether or not you must have prospecting to create an opening to the cave?
Empty ant hills are why I have trust issues.

You seem to have caves and mine holes mixed up. Cave entrances are naturally formed and can be entered without needing any skill. Mine holes require the prospecting skill to make.
