In-game there are no set rules governing player interactions.

Theft is a skill that you can buy with your points that allows you (along with tresspassing skill) to go and steal other people's stuff. You need to be careful though because acts such as theft and trespassing leaves scents which other players can then track you down and either knock out your char or kill him. hope this helps.

From what you say it sounds like you don't have a claim. Get one. Even more important, build a Palisade. When you are done with that, get metal and build a brick wall. Then you're pretty much safe. Even if you aren't safe, you'll have a 24 hour notice before you get your shit rocked.
