New player Question

Postby TheOne » Sat Mar 03, 2012 12:17 pm

Heya

First of let me state that I knew it was a game where death was for good and you had to restart nearly from scratch when you died. And I liked that about the game and I knew exactly what I signed up for..

However I am curious
Here is what happened.. I have been playing for a week approximately, I built my character towards exploration so my stats were around 40 survival, 35 exploration, 21 int agi and per, around 15-20 in the other attributes..
I was going out to harvest some clay, some other character showed up and I instantly dropped the boat I was carrying and left the wagon there and started running.. I had about 2 water skins filled and was running away. Slowly but surely the other character caught up to me, mostly during lag spikes where it was clear that we were both lagging but somehow the gap got smaller in those spikes. I was running for about 1-2 minutes around some fortification.. After about the 5th lag spike and the 3rd round around the fortification he caught up to me and hit me for roughly 130 I think.. which put me to the ground instantly.. then about 30 seconds later he hit me for another 130ish which killed me.. I wasnt wearing any armor, and I havent had a chance to try out combat yet.

What I am wondering is was there anything I could have done to prevent myself from dieing? Like lets for example say that a fortification of mine was close by which was also secured by the red area, could I have somehow saved myself? I guess I could have tried to open the gate and close it again before he slipped in however with the lag I have experienced in this game this didnt seem very plausible..

Again, I am just asking what my options were, I am not complaining, I am not ranting and I am not whining.. I am just considering if its worth to start over, seeing as this might happen any time in the future when I get unlucky with some lag..

A claim (the red area) won't do anything for you, people that have the murder skill will just walk into a claim with criminal act turned on, and probably have all the "black" skills. A claim will protect only the items you will have in it if people don't have the skill to steal or destroy them. Yes in your situation, if you had a palisade with a key, being behind it would have probably saved you, since a palisade need a lot of strength and time to be destroyed. So you probably would have been able to go inside a house, drop from combat and log out (you need to be out of combat to log out, if not your character will stay in game). But since it doesn't seam it was your palisade really i don't think anything could have saved you here. Running far enough to drop combat and log out or port to your hearth fire are the only solution here in your case. Also for your knowledge those people that kill on sight usually fill their inventory with buckets of water so they can chase other for a long time, but you can always get lucky.
But when the guy murdered you he left scent, a ranger can grab them, track the guy and kill him even if he is offline. The guy is probably behind some brick wall though, and feel safe enough to kill every noob he encounter.

Thank you for your kind reply Halagaz

infact it was me and my brothers balisade, but I did not want to risk him getting inside and killing my brother as well..
Also I didnt mention our claim and my brother because I wasnt sure if he would continue playing but we have decided against it, so no harm can be done in revealing his presence.

Its a shame because I really really love the game, I just dont have the RL time to devote to this if it can be wiped away so easily :(

Appart from entering pali you could've tried to make a circle and get on his boat leaving him behind, on shore, by the time he got yours to water you most likely would have dropped him and could log out. Also the less often you click the less likely you are to rubberband, so probably you were clicking in short (relatively to him) distances more often than him, who was clicking by the edge of screen, which made him catch up in lag spikes. Two other things that could've prepared you somewhat for this are beeing a part of village (you are much less likely to be attacked randomly since even if you are/look noobish griefers will be weary of your ville having warriors capable of immidiate response) and having multiple alts, specialized for some roles, meaning if you lost a gathering alt you wouldn't loose everything.

The game is very alt friendly now with the curio system, that's how most people manage the problem with perma death. If at the beginning it seam hard to feed alts with curios because you barely find/craft enough for your main character, very soon in the game you really find enough of those to have few backup characters. So my advise is just to have at least an other character you feed with the extra curio you find, so that you can use it in such case. You also can have a claim where you store some lp, so that if you die, you still can come back to your feet easily since you can declaim and get back your lp even if your die. So they really are few alternative around this "perma death", in fact its not that harsh as people might think, well it is when you really have a nice character in fact, but not much at the beginning.

One thing about a claim, though: If it's your claim, sure, the other guy can enter without trespassing (just need criminal acts on, which already is if you're attacked). However, every time the person tries to trespass across the claim, it stops them and they have to click to move again.

If the claim is large enough and in front of your gate, sure, there's a chance you can get in the gate, close it, and escape to a house fast enough to log off. The problem is this: odds are you're going to die to this guy out in the wilderness (or some other random creature) or even inside your walls. Do you really want to risk your gate key by carrying it with you?

It's pretty easy to recover a character once you know what you're doing. A few hundred thousand LP is made up in a few days once you have some industry going and things like wine or beer and some other things that can boost your INT or learning ability (tea is a big one and available early). Take advantage of the current game mechanics and create your own personal village (to extend Halagaz's point a bit).

TL:DR

He caught up because he had a bucket of water

also the way this game works

the less you click, the faster you move

Thank you for all your nice comments and helpful input..

I realized later that I had a boat docked very close to where he was chasing me around the fortress, so if I had reacted properly I could have reached my boat instead of making a futile effort of running away.. that way I might have survived.. ou well if I decide to continue playing I will be smarter next time :D

Its all about learning from your mistakes, and the mistakes of others.
