As far as I know, the default client hasn't changed since it was made, but using the default client is a bad idea. If you're using Ender's (recommended), it should have an auto-updater, just take a look at his thread: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14575

Ender's can use the auto-updater OR you can manually install updates. If you use the auto-updater, you need to download it separately and place it in the same folder as the rest of the client. Personally, I don't install every update released from Ender. He's a pretty good programmer, but even the best miss bugs. Since he's not doing this full time, it can be days before the bug is found and fixed.
