found natural cave

hey guys.
I found a natural cave, and I am really excited...
or i was...
i dont know what to do with it
i know what caves and mines and what not are for and their awesomeness, but i am at a loss to why natural caves are special
i see their mushrooms from time to time...
but i cant seem to mine in it
i cant seem to build in it
i can only bring in boxes
so am i missing something?

According to the wiki and some other sources I read these days, you can't build/mine in the cave within 50 blocks of the entrance... if you go further than that, you should be able to do the things you want.

You can build in mines past the 50 space zone already mentioned. Structures must wither be paved or on mined out floor. Pay attention to the message it give you when you cant mine an area and check it against the list in the wiki and you will have a rough idea of the strength you will need to mine that area. Check around though you may find softer areas.

No, it can still be useful. Items don't decay inside caves so they make nice storage.
