Palisade, am I doing it right? (image attached)

Postby ArtemisGray » Thu Mar 22, 2012 12:35 am

Hello. I've made a shitty little drawing illustrating the way my Palisade wall is going to be built.

I've made my settlement on a cliff face, and I was told I need to place two initial cornerposts.

My question is, there is no more initial cornerposts I would need to place in a Palisade constructed like the one in my drawing right?

I just don't want to start building it and find I need to gather more materials.

It's also two tiles between cornerposts for a gate right? I remember screwing this up last world.

Yep, seems perfectly right (althou since i was the one to tell you that you need two cp's maybe you'd want to wait for "independent" oppinion ;) )
On the other hand if cliff wall is fairly straight and there's no cave entrance you want access to then you could build a wall between cp's you marked as initial and then you'd do all right with only one of them beeing actual initial cp.

Don't build on a cliff face.

That drawing seems to be perfectly fine (and yes a 2 tile gap between 2 cornerposts is what you need for the gate.

I'd recommend you don't use a cliff as a wall however as there is always issues present with people being able to bugjump through the small gaps between the cornerpost and the cliff face. This is your choice however.

I'll also recommend you give yourself plenty of room to use for when you add more areas like tree farms, animal pens and the sort. In other words, don't lock yourself in and cause more problems down the road.

Thanks all.

I can't build a wall to each of the initial cornerposts because my buildings are right on the cliffs edge.

The reason I built my settlement on next to a cliff was because I thought it would act like a free wall, and I wouldn't need to cut down as many trees to build wall.

As I now realize, building in a flat area might be best. Too late now however.

Other than room to expand, you also want a "buffer zone" where you will rarely tread (other than scouting the walls for rams) so that you don't get shot by somebody from just off screen.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Oh boy, oh wow. I seriously goofed up...

I put a section of wall where a cornerpost needed for my gate should have been.

I need to demolish that section of the wall... crap.

I guess I need to construct a battering ram? it says you need 36 strength to do it solo. I have like, 12.

Have I just really stuffed my settlement up?

If I constructed a battering ram and made an alt character, could I maybe destroy the wall?

You might just want to adjust your designs to accommodate your mistake, if possible.

It can't be fixed... right?

Can't believe I just did this.

I think it's still salvageable. You would probably only need to make an extra wall section to either in your base or outside... I believe if you made a cornerpost now (leaving only 1 space) and then a few wall sections towards east (on the image bottom right) and then another cornerpost, and then wall sections towards south (bottom left on the picture) and then yet another cornerpost in line with the current cornerpost, you could make a sideways gate blocking the entrance... (kinda hard to explain, maybe I should draw, but I am lazy right now).
