Setting up a Camp.

Postby Zorgal » Thu Mar 22, 2012 3:28 pm

Howdy everyone.

Now, i came back to HnH after a veeery long Pause, so im accommodated to the Basics. The only thing i never came around to do was building a decent Camp of my own. Luckily when i restarted playing i got someone to act as my Mentor, still theres a question, or rather something that makes me curios i allways wondered about.

How do you set up a Camp from Scratch? What do you look out for in Terms of Position and Ressources? What are good Layouts? Whats first priority?

This may be a bit much, but it would help me alot to hear some Opinions and maybe a tip or two. (Also it would feed my Curiosity)

Stay away from rivers, villages and people. Get your personal claim up as soon as possible. Build fence around your home, and a hearth fire instead of a gate.
Rabbits / Chickens for your first bones and make a bone saw. Raise your EXPL and PER to be able to see better curios. Also around 150 in UC/MC. (If bad things happen you will be able to tank some attacks.)
About 30 MMS and a Q15+ sling to hunt boars. (Q15 sling will never cause a bear flee, I still use mine when hunting bears :D )
Don't forget Survival, too.
Try to find a mountain and a stone node for better stone axe.
Get materials for palisade and claim the whole place. Then, get your brickwall up. Just get yourself enough irons and steels. Beg, steal, trade, just do it.

Edit: Wait... You are gonna leave me?

Q15 sling will never cause a bear flee

I heard it was 20... Is it actually 15? (This should get posted in the protip thread imo)

Not sure on the exact quality or DPS threshold, but I believe it's under a q20 sling no matter what. The character's perception will also effect DPS as the damage range is sling max damage down to 0.5 * archer PER / target AGI * max damage. (sling max damage being 60 * sqrt (q / 10) ). Also, the character's MM skill can slow down dps even more as the bar only moves as fast as the amount of MM allows. So, in conclusion, a character with 5 MM and 10 PER could use a slightly higher Q sling than a character with 40 MM and 50 PER.

I recommend setting up a temporary, claimed camp before you set out to look for a permanent one. You can start dumping lp into the claim to be retrieved later, and you can start thinking about what aspects you value the most.

Yes, being close to a river will make it more likely you are raided. You should also consider the availability of local terrain types. Mountains and swamps are good for foraging for curios, grasslands have different kinds of animals, and mud sometimes has clay nodes. Brambles are ok if you really don't want people to find you (assuming they are big and you are far from a river). Also consider where you are more likely to find metal. Mountains don't have caves, but are more likely to have metal under them. A good claim should also have a well inside the walls.

Find out where you are on the map, then look around for good areas if you like your neighbors.
