How long do scents stay around?

I understand not exactly how scents left by committing criminal acts work.

But, if I trespass onto someones land and steal a great deal of his possessions, I will leave a trail back to where I live correct?

Is there a way to somehow mask the scents you leave? could I walk far off into one direction then hearth back to my home, cutting off the trail?

How long do scents stay around? I know that the higher your Perception and Exploration you can see scents more easily.

When you right-click a scent, the options (possibly I don't have the exact wording correct) are:
'Track Perpetrator' (not 'which way did they go?', it's 'where are they now?'; if they are dead or not logged it tells you this)
'Track Hearth', which will direct you to the perpetrator's hearth (note that if it's in a cave or mine, you will be directed to the spot on the earth's surface that is directly above their hearth, i.e. possibly a random bit of empty forest)
in the case of theft, 'Track Stolen Object', which will direct you to the stolen object unless it's been consumed (eaten, studied, dropped in a river etc) or is not currently in the world (is in the possession of a logged-out person, and I don't actually know how it works with things in houses/cellars/boats etc.

I don't believe that's what he asked. I forgot the times before scents expire as well though.

I believe murder is 8 days?

Yes, however the wiki does answer the question in the threads title, for some reason I thought I checked the wiki. I didn't, my mistake.
