Explore a large enough area so that you are familiar with landmarks, such as several mudflats near each other, a shape of a lake, junctions of rivers, etc. If you use Ender's or another client that stores the minimaps, you can go to that folder and there is an .html page you can open and it'll show you a composite of your most recent session.
