What it is,I think, is that hives work like tamed critters, they are capped by their feed history. So when you started those hives with Q5 crops or whatever, they need to "eat" a shitload of higher Q crops to bring that historical average up. Could be wrong tho, my experiences have been similar to yours, but then I fucked up and made one out of shit boards (low q metal saw, no carp skill), and got the same Q wax as the good one(80+ saw, 40+ carp).

nah, you can keep the same beehives, the quality of materials for hives doesn't matter, just be sure to have a lot of farm tiles around them and harvest/replant them frequently
