Bonfire Question

This is going to be silly, but here goes.

A friend and I recently moved into a small abandoned settlement. There is a bonfire here. I've read about them on the Wiki and such but I can't fuel it up with either sticks or logs. Do I need the relevant skills to do so or can I do it unskilled? I would've thought unskilled but who knows.
