What happened to my chicken coop?

Postby Crow1313 » Tue May 01, 2012 4:14 pm

Hey guys,

A newbie question here so maybe some vets can help me figure it out. I have a claim that is palisaded and I logged on after being off for a 3 days and 2 chicken coops and my oven disappeared. There were all inside my claim and inside my walls. I'm curious as to what happened to them? Did they get destoried from lack of upkeep over 3 days or did someone come along and kick them in?

A few details:

They were built right along the side of my wall if that matters.
They were all built on a mudflat without any paving stones.
I also had a kiln in the same area and it is heavly damaged so it can't be used anymore, but it is still standing. The oven was built after the kiln with no repairs to either sinse building.
The chicken coops were only a few days old before I took the weekend off.

Also I picked up the ranging skill today to check for scents but I didn't find anything. This could be because I'm a lowbie but I'm not sure.

Any ideas and how could I avoid this in the future?

It needs to be on stone to prevent decay.

I get that, but does a chicken coop decay within 3 days? How about an Oven? I had my oven for about a week with no visible decay and it disappears over the weekend?

I'm trying to find out if someone knocked them down or if I need to build them somewhere else to prevent this from happening again after I rebuild.

There will be vandalism scents if someone kicked them in, so get ranging and check for scents.

I think it's more likely they decayed. Decay isn't continuous damage, it's a sudden burst of damage at random intervals. It's possible you got unlucky and had a couple decay hits in a few days' timespan.

It has been a while since I have built things that are subjected to decay or applied A > Y destroy shortcut to a chicken coop but I believe I recall that coops are rather fragile which may explain the spontaneous destruction of the coop. Also the interval of decay is, as mentioned by Phaen, entirely random and can occur at almost immediately (perhaps even before your eyes), or almost forever.

Advice given is essentially to pave the area you want to build with stone first inside your claim before building. That way most buildable items are protected from decay hits.

Listen to the vets above: pave before you build.

Can you even build these objects without the ground being completely paved anymore? I've not tried because items are supposed to decay extremely fast without being on a solid foundation.

You can still build structures (houses, ovens) on grass and mudflats provided that you aren't worried about decay hits. Some like boats and ram you can build anywhere.
