My farm. Critique it?

Postby ArtemisGray » Tue May 15, 2012 12:26 am

Greetings,

I've recently got back to doing my actual job of tending to the farm, and am wondering what I can do with my villages farm.

I'm well aware it's somewhat messy, and there is multiple beehives in weird spots.

I sectioned off each area with stone just to make it simple, however the amount of wax/honey produced isn't nearly as great as it could be if I made the farms nice and compact within the radius of one hive.

The amount of crops seems to be sufficient enough to sustain my village members, and produce what is currently needed.

1. Critique, what can I do with this farm? what is your opinion? completely demolish it and set it up in a different way? what way do you find is the best? should I decrease or increase the amount of tiles a certain crop covers?

2. I currently use Pumpkins to fuel my livestocks troughs. Would switching the pumpkins to the area I have my beetroot in be a good idea? or at a quick glance is the area the pumpkins are in not large enough for that many beetroot to fill atleast 5+ troughs?

3. Post a screenshot of your farm? I completely understand if one wants to keep their methods to themselves however. I'm just looking to improve.

Thanks, here is my farm as it currently stands.

Regards,

Arty

Back when crafting things gave LP, I set up my farms like this with extra emphasis on wheat/hemp. I've kinda carried the same basic layout in current worlds, although it's probably overkill to have that much space now. I like it because it's pretty and symmetrical though (even to the point where you've got tall crops mirroring tall crops and short mirroring short).

Also a lot of your stuff is way too big. Very rarely do you actually farm for the materials, so just think of all the extra time spent farming those fields only to increase the quality by 2. Keep most stuff (pepper/hops/onions) really really small (3x4) that way it's not a pain in the ass to farm it out every day.

Depends what you're farming for, If you're after rising qualities fast then you don't need too much of a large area, If you're after mass production then you're going want to have larger fields somewhat more organized.

Needs more cows ^_^ and I would argue your tea field is a bit to big, but other than that, farming is a personal experience, become one with nature.
I had a retardedly huge signature and have gotten this embarrassing replacement to show for it.

I have seen people make circular farms around beehives to make it correspond with bee hive zones. I dont know how beneficial that is compared to the rectangular approach.

Circular field around beehive - for high q wax/honey farming. Wax/honey q calculated as average q of tiles. Unplanted/paved tiles count as 0 q.
So if you need high q wax/honey - you must plant all tiles in beehive sector. Also, some ppl recommend to hide beehive in boat/cart while replant this field (beehive can make field check while you replant).

I dislike the size of your fields, mine are 4x4 so I can put the seeds in an LC and sort them. (4 x 4 x 3 = 48)
But then again, I don't farm enough for a whole village, merely my plot.

I don't really know much about village-size farms but if you want my input, I think you should have 3 separate farms.
1. Wax Farm - high q, fast-growing crops (i.e. carrots) are the only thing planted in the radius of a single beehive. Harvest OFTEN or wax q will drop
2. Quality Crop Farm - small fields (3x3 or 4x4) of every crop, sorted for quality and harvested as often as humanly possible
3. Production Farm - as many extra tiles of crops that you need, harvested only as demanded. Occasionally revamped with new seeds from the Quality farm

let the wax farm slide when you aren't in need of highq wax
adjust the size of the production farm's fields as needs change

Here is my advice for your farm:
  • My first advice is to have your crops section in areas with at least one single dimension in a multiple of 3 corresponding with getting 3 seeds per harvest with the exception of tea (2) and pumpkins (8).
  • Make small fields for quality raising and several patches of large field of material production.
  • You need to move your pumpkins and beetroots next to the livestock pen so you have less distance to travel to move the troughs.
  • Get another cart since one isn't enough for your farm. It helps move troughs, LCs, and cupboards around as well as allow you to store plows, looms, and cupboard to protect them from decay. Also you may want to widen the boundaries between part of your farm for easier cart transportation. Have the respective storage carts next to the crop that they facilitate such as loom next to your hemp or winepress next to grapes (you've done the grape part).
  • I highly recommend not only separating the sheep from cows and pigs but also to use gate to trap livestocks. Make roundpole gates and destroy the cornerpost to allow easy access "gate pens". Then create a small section for controlled breeding.
