If you talk about mining then:
No, armour can't protect you from cave-ins damage. In equipment list - only Miner's helm can protect, it reduce damage.
I heard that cave-in boulder do about 50*level, so at 1lvl it about 50, at 2lvl it 100, etc. But you can catch more than one boulder at your head. =)

Use mine supports or zig-zag mining.
