What skills are needed for a miner

Postby builder19 » Sat May 19, 2012 6:17 am

I've been miner in serveral worlds, gathering strenght and finding a good spot to make a mine hole.
But what skills do I need to focus on when I have got 94 STR or so. And a good Q pickaxe?
I was thinking of Unarmcombat, because they say you need strenght for that.
And Constitution, for the cave-ins wich happpen.
Could somebody tell me the basic skills a miner needs? Thanks.

A miner needs no skills, only strength.

If you want to do smithing, too, raise that. I think a few smithing pieces need Psy as part of the quality (curios, jewelry).

I'm only a bit of a novice miner. But here is what I know.

But I think you've got it nailed in regards to the important stuff.

Strength - Probably the most needed stat, the more you have the faster you mine. And you need it high enough to mine on the lower levels depending on the hardness of the stone or whatever.

Constitution - The more you have, the greater the chance of surviving cave ins. But with a miners helmet the first couple levels are okay with kinda low Con.

As for anything else, I think it really depends on if the character is JUST a miner or your main etc.

If it's just a miner, get up your STR, some CON. Put your Tradition slider to full. ( Don't have to feed the character tons of STR food to get back to where you were if you get killed by a cave in or what not. )

Otherwise, UA/MC, some Agility. Some INT maybe, to compensate for full Barbarism if you choose that. Turn your miner into a bit of a combat character too since you're going to have high STR.

Idk, my 2 cents.

Yes, to make it a combo with miner and combat is a good idea, because it has the strenght it needed and UC is easy.

I've got my slider down to Barbarism, Live and Industry for mining. So I should keep buying Smithing?

Miners will, more than likely, at some point get smacked by a cave in. It really is best if you can avoid doing anything else with them. However, I tend to hermit a lot, and so if you're not the super-industrial type of hermit, the amount you can get done is limited and so it consolidates well with smithing.

Yes, it goes well with a fighter, too, but since there isn't a cap to how high you want to push skills and other useful stats (such as Agility and Charisma), it's best if fighters don't risk dying to a cave in. At least if you stick to a smith, you can stay at full tradition and minimize your risk of losing a major character to a cave in.

But if I go to full Tradition then I will lose my learning ability, or isn't that a big problem?

That's a pretty big problem.

You only need so much smithing before it's pointless to get anymore though. The question to ask yourself is what quality material are you working with? If you have lower quality metals than your (Smithing+Strength)/2 then you already have too much smithing. Let your metal quality rise before you buy more smithing.

This is actually why it's not a problem for miners to pick up smithing as a secondary. If you do need to increase your skill some, you'll eat up 3x the amount of curios, but you can grind for a target number first (say 100, 150) and then move to tradition to preserve as much of it as you can when you eventually die. (And I thought it was sqrt (str * smith). )
