When is it not safe to log out

I heard your character says in-game if you exit during a battle. That means I cant just escape being killed.

Is it the same for animals? In what other situations is death unavoidable?

Animals will not kill you. Once they've knocked you out, they'll stop attacking; though they annoyingly tend to stick around your body and attack you again once you can stand.

You will remain in-game if:
1. You are under attack by a player or animal (You can logout safely after you are knocked out by an animal.)
2. You are swimming.
3. Sometimes the client will crash, but your character will remain in the game for a short time.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.
