When people talk about:

(Insert desired item) for (insert number) points or (some amount) pearls.

example:

sling for 50 points or 2 pearls.

What are the points?

If you look in the 'Buying' section then you will see what people value items as, Points aren't anything real, they just symbolize what they are valued as, Different traders value items according to how how much they want them.

How do people know how the other person puts points on things then?

If you go to the bottom of the the thread you exampled you'll see this:

Buying

Q10 Pearl = 50 pts (buying q20+ pearls, discuss with me for price)
Shocked Frog = 60 pt
Bluebell = 50 pts
Flotsam = 20 pts
Edelweiß = 12 pts
Ant Empress = 10 pts
Ant Queen = 5 pts
Toadstool = 5 pts
Boletes = 8 points
Glimmermoss = 3 points
Frog Crown = 5 pts

lets say you have 5 q10 pearls, 10 Glimmers and 10 edels, All together that's 400 pts, So now you have 400 pts to spend in the 'Selling' section, Make sense?

All traders will have a buying and selling section, Again, you should check the thread to see their points system as it will vary slightly depending on the trader.
