not enough coal for smelter=all stone?

I just mined an inventory full of an unknown ore with a character that had full industry, and threw it in the smelter for processing. I only used one piece of coal cause I read that's all you need if you do it in a certain way, but this time I got nothing but stone. This is a statistically possible, but unlikely scenario for 20+ pieces of ore. Did it all turn to stone because of long odds, or did I mess up by letting the fire go out too soon?

Has anyone done any actual experimentation with adding an inadaquate amount of coal for smelting? What were the results?

I always use one coal and fuel bug it. It doesn't affect the chance no more than it should. Just RNG is PMSing.

Yes. No difference. I freaked about it the first time I smelted because I was smelting silver and didn't understand it had a significantly lower success rate than copper, tin, or iron. Because of this I also thought that all metals gave nuggets instead of bars.

What level did you mine this ore at? If it's 2+, you might have hit a precious metal vein, and getting full stone is fairly common with those.
