Converting to a Miner

Postby FictionRyu » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:17 am

I need some advice.
I want to convert one of my characters to a miner.

Here are his stats:

And I currently have ~42k LP set into my claim which I can dissolve (obvioulsy I just did to find out that) and use some of the LP from that to pump into any of my current stats.

I've read the wiki, but I wanted advice from experienced miners.
obviously I have some more 'advancing' to do as some of the primary attributes for mining are..well..crap. Haha. But, anyways, like I said, any advice is helpful.
And yes, I've read many topics on the subject of mining paths, so I know what to do.

It really depends on if that character is to be JUST a miner, which for that all you basically need is STR and full industry. ( and tradition so you don't have to eat so much STR food if you die. ) And also Smithing if you choose to use that character for it. But really you only need like 100-ish Smithing.

( Oh, but don't quote me on the 100 smithing, I'm unsure if any formulas use Smithing*Str or something on many items. )

Anything other than that, such as like a miner/combat alt. Or even a main, you need to take into account that with full tradition, you can't gain lots of LP. With full change, you obviously can gain more. However if you die from a cave in with full change you're potentially throwing away a lot of STR.

That's what I plan on doing is having this character to be just a straight-up miner. I started off thinking of just making him a side character, but then I dsicovered a cave near my dwelling so I decided that I will need some better protection then my simple wooden walls. Not to mention I need some better equipment.
If he's to be a straight miner, will he need some different stats in order to craft metal items?

I believe you need Psyche for things such as jewelry, maybe table items such as knives, plates, etc. I'm honestly not sure though.

Quote from the wiki "Psyche in conjunction with Smithing, affects the quality of Jewelry"

With high STR raising your Psyche could become very difficult.

For some items you need STR*Smithing, like I mentioned jewelry needs Psyche*Smithing. You could possibly just raise your smithing on one of your characters that has good Psyche and use that one for Jewelry. And the other ( your main miner ) for recipes that require STR*Smithing.

Ah yeah but really. For a straight forward miner.

1. STR is your main attribute.
2. Get full Industry.
3. Get full Tradition ( after you've got some LP for your Smithing )
4. Mine away!
5. ???
6. Ore, ore everywhere!

What kind of 'gear' would I need for a miner? A miners helm, pick axe, and..? Is there really anything else needed but those?

Though I've heard about cave-ins, wouldn't it be helpful to have high health?

Yeah, pretty much just a Pickaxe and a Miner's helmet.

However, doesn't hurt to wear a Bear Talisman, Merch robes ( for the extra bit of space if you've got a spare set of robes )

You can wear a bear cape, I've never had a cave in while snake mining but apparently it can happen. So it's probably best to just wear a miners helmet 24/7 unless you're completely confident in what you're doing.

About high CON/health.. uhhh, I'm curious about something semi regarding that.

When you get hit by a cave in, your Miner's Helmet gets it's quality reduced. I do not know if, depending on what level you're on when a cave in happens. If the reduction to the quality of your Helmet is increased. And if you say.. get hit by a level 5 cave in, your helmet could be completely destroyed ( if it's shitty quality ) and you take a great deal of damage.

Or... if a Miner's Helmet just stops you from getting killed with 100 health even from a level 5 cave in.

Maybe someone can answer that. But I guess more health sure can't hurt.

Sorry, that's not exactly a straightforward answer, hahaha.

Sometimes the modifier is geometrical resultant of smithing and psyche so rising your smithing might be a good idea if you plan being jeweler, since psyche isn't generally easy atrib to rise.

Artemis, I'm not entirely sure on the answer to your question. However, I propose it is smarter to either swap to a mining helm you know won't be instantly destroyed, or make sure you have at least enough to survive the damage of a cave in. Also, as you go further down in layers the cave in boulders deal more damage. Level 5 with a miner's helm, 100 hp won't save you.

It's actually found on the forums. On the top of the page, click the Account tab (located next to Log out when logged in). Next scroll down to the section called characters, and click on the one which you want to see.
