Gates, Crossroads and Villages

Postby dakepwns » Mon Jun 25, 2012 6:51 pm

I'm almost finished building a palisade for my hermit settlement, and I've realized a bit of a problem. If I want to start a village, I need more people. But if I have more people, I need crossroads since it's unsafe to give everyone a key. But I need a village to make a crossroads. What should I do?

It's unsafe to use gates regardless of the amount of people. Make a sling, raise your MM as high as you can and go around your rivers searching for a bear. You might be able to buy Antlers for the idol (You might have to smash an alt's HF which reguires 25 Strength with a stone axe, port to the trader's idol and party your main and sail back), and later steel, wrought and iron/bronze for the CR, for leather or any other valuables you have.

Edit: You could actually probablly sell the bear, but tell the trader you want the teeth.

I have a ways to go before I can do that. I need to get Lawspeaking, my MM is only 13, and raise up 30k lp for the claim. I still don't see how this could work. Should I not finish my palisade until I get a claim up? Also, once I build a claim doesn't it go away if I don't have enough authority, so I need a bunch of other people?

Not exactly. If it gets below a certain threshhold then anyone can do anything on the claim as though the claim wasn't there.

The village is born with 125.000 authority, and it takes a while for that to drop, besides is easy to get it up just with the same curios you are feeding your toon now.
You dont need a bunch of people, you can make a village on your own by having a secondary account with alts you make villagers. This way is used to make trading posts by experienced players.
If you play on your own you still need a secondary account to have a key holder and avoid going out with your key, because you can be killed and all your stuff stolen/griefed.

What I would do in your place is yes, build a pali and as soon as you can build a brickwall 25 tiles out of the usable area to try to avoid snipers. Do it on a personal claim 25 tiles larger than your setlement to the 4 directions, to make it difficult for players to use rams and check your walls every day.

You need bear teeth and deer antlers to be able to build a village claim and the deers are far way harder to kill IMHO than the bears, because they autoheal. So it is a better idea to buy this things to be able to make the crossroads for your own use and not needing to use the key holder alt.

Good luck!. :D

Don't you need to discover all the materials involved in the Village Idol process?

You need a different perspective on the thing as a whole.

Establish yourself and advance your settlement before being able to make a village and all that. If you try to cut corners and make the village before the process of making a village is easy, you're putting yourself in a worse situation. Unless you already have the foundation set, villages with strangers are usually bound to fail.

You have only 13 marksmanship, no palisade, no lawspeaking, you don't have access to the skills to get all the materials for a village claim.

Making a village can wait. Trying to do what you're doing now only complicates the process, let it go for just a week or two.

I think I just bought a bear tooth from a barter stand and that was enough to be able to build it with a new toon.

Well, if you buy it from a barter stand then that counts as discovering it, however any other alternative you do not discover and thus, I have my questions answered, I need to discover the Antlers. Fuck.

You could build yourself a barter stand. Then load it with an alt and buy the stuff with your main.
