Best way to know if a village can kill thieves

What are some signs to look for when scoping out a claimed noob base that can tell a non-combat thief if it's not a good idea to steal or not?

Regardless if a village goes out and kills thieves, rangers do, and will track your scent, thieving is more likely to get you killed than critters, I know this from experience. If you have a low stealth, don't do it. Also, there's no real way of telling if people will pursue thieves who steal from their place.

Look for signs of recent activity. Plowing, dried hides, out of place boats, etc. If you don't see any of these things then it's an inactive camp and probably safer to steal from

Stealth doesn't matter. AFAIK 4 times less perc*exp is required vs int*stealth od perp. (several tries required)
Just hide behind a brickwall or use alts. Or make sure you wander with armed group.

The scents are seen the same way curios/foragables show, thru a random chance but based off of your perc*exp vs their stealth*int. The "4 times" thing you observed could just be chance/luck. Stealth effects the delta also.

Basically, (unless they have a pali-basher, then you'll want a brickwall for sure, but it's safer to have a brick wall anyways) just build a house, palisades, hide your hearth fire inside the house, and patrol your palisades for sign posts of battering rams and battering rams themselves every day. Find one? Destroy that shit. Simple enough. (assuming you've stolen some stuff for people to track you, but you should patrol your place no matter what in case of other thieves).

Depending on how big you make your place it could take no less than a minute to 5 minutes, not a big deal.

Active or not.

But if you're REALLY paranoid, or you go inactive for more than 24 hours on occassion, or don't have friends to check, I suppose it's a good idea to follow the other people's guidelines.

I'll admit to only playing for a solid 2 months, these other guys are definitely more experienced, but I've plundered a few places. Some active, some not. Still goin strong. Haven't died once yet, and the one guy who thought it'd be funny to steal from our place, (we were still new, had just built a mine hole which was connected to a huge network of others, hadn't put up our sign post thing) we tracked down and murdered.

He died over a wine glass btw...

P.s. If you can tell what nationality the village is, you should try setting your attack up when in their timezone they're asleep.
