What do I do now?

Postby pumaFGT » Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:36 pm

I find myself in a bit of a predicament. After taking a several-month hiatus and restarting Haven and Hearth, I've come to a point where I'm not sure what to do next. While I have experience with early-game shenanigans, what comes next eludes me.

I have significant Perc*Exp to find fantastic curios--Peculiar Flotsam are a beast. I have significant Marksmanship that I can fell foxes and bears with little issue and no great amount of patience. I have racks and racks of WWWs drying so that I can get started with crops, and my Farming raised so that they are of decent quality. A palisade is in construction to wall my hermitage in. But without plant fibers or straw, I am stuck until I can harvest them and do something with them. Waiting for wheat to grow is like watching paint dry.

The question is, what do I do? Once I harvest the necessary straw, do I construct beehives to get wax to make hardened leather so that I can mine? Do I go for a chicken coop first? And how dire is a Herbalist's Table? Should I be focusing more on finding and killing a bear?

I suppose it's silly to complain that there are so many avenues to take that I don't know which to pick. What, in your opinion, would be the next logical step for progression?

If you want to invest any decent to a large amount of time in this game, you're going to need to make getting a Brick Wall up as soon as you can a priority.

http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Brickwall

You need

- Bricks, which require a kiln and clay.
- Wrought Iron, which require you to have a Minehole, an Iron node, Ore Smelters, Finery Forge, and a character with a decent amount of Strength.
- Steel, which require you to have bars of Wrought Iron, Steel Crucibles, and plenty of fuel. ( you can use low quality blocks of wood in a palisade signpost for this )

It takes time to build and gather all the materials for all the things you need to produce the next, so maybe try what I'm listing below if it tickles your fancy.

1. Build your palisade.
2. Farm your crops when you can
3. Look for deer if you can kill them, get four Antlers.
4. Kill a bear, get four Bear Teeth
5. Focus on constructing a village idol, this could potentially make getting your Brickwall up much quicker. And gives you the ability to trade. viewtopic.php?f=30&t=27161 ( Phaen is a trusty trader and has a lot of things that you can purchase to help get you going )
6. Hunt bears, forage valuable curios such as Flotsams, Bluebells, Pearls, Edelweiss, and other things such as cavebulbs, blueberries. Things people list on trade threads they are looking to buy.
7. Trade the aforementioned for things you need, wax/hardened leather, a pickaxe, a better sling so you can hunt faster, metal tools, Wall Grade metals/Wrought/Steel so you can make a minehole etc

That kind of method is faster than gathering every single resource and thing you need yourself.

Just a little advice, but you don't have to take any of it, do whatever you feel is enjoyable.

Oho. Good advice from the both of you. I'd skimmed the guide, but by the time I'd gotten there, I'd done most everything it recommended. Mining / brickwall building is the real issue I guess, and there's a nice clay node a stroll away.

I wouldn't have thought to hit the trading board so early, but... Let's see. Thanks!

Yes early on, traders are your best friends. Fresh bear corpses go for almost as much as a pearl. Not to mention the good demand for flotsams/edels.

Speaking of pearls, you can use some spare time for that too: pearling

And make sure to build your brick wall AROUND the palisade so you can seal your cornerposts.

Not so much this but more so someone doesn't come along, bash in your palisade and then build it back up to protect a ram, which the defender could then bash in and break the ram themselves, but... such a pain.
