How to Kill a Bear

Postby rollinggun73 » Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:18 pm

The most I can kill right now is a boar with a q51 sling. About how much perception/mm is needed to kill a bear (in about a couple of minutes). Also, if the bear runs away, do I stand still and wait for it to come back, or do I chase it. I'm still a noob at this game and would appreciate some tips.

I can kill a bear in a few minutes with a q91 sling, 45 mm, 20 perc

When it runs chase it until it turns back to you, then run back to the boat.

hunting becomes a lot easier when utilizing the "twitch" hunting technique (a quick search on the forums should give you numerous threads on it). Basically you wait with firing until right after the animal tried to repath his way to you (assuming he can't reach you). If you fire fast enough after this, they will never run (requires SOME practice, but you get the hang of it pretty quick).

You could kill a bear with a Q1 sling, but of course it would go SLOW. The most important thing here is the sling quality, higher quality means more damage (with the standard sqrt(quality/10) multiplier this game uses). Higher markmanship will only make you aim faster (you won't notice any effect beyond twice the sling quality, some acronyms here but the wiki says more on that. Not really important if you just use a sling & remember the x2 thing).

As for actual values, I'd say a Q70-80 sling with mm 50+ should get you that kill relatively fast (i.e. without getting bored while killing it)

Don't do this. Use the twitching glitch. Chasing a bear, especially in this lag, will probably result in you not being alive anymore.

Alright, I just killed my first bear, but I don't want to butcher or skin it yet worrying I will ruin the quality of it. If I increase survival, will the quality increase?

Implying you don't already have 200 survival, your survival will be softcapping the butcher quality. Also, your cutting tool will also softcap the quality.

Increase your survival as much as you can, if you didn't already have 10 survival, you can now create a quality 10 stone axe with a Q10 branch and stone without it being softcapped.

also, be aware that the bear corpse will decay into a bear skeleton after 8 hours (meaning you lose meat, intestines & hide) and that this skeleton will disappear too after a while (can't remember the timeframe here)

Thanks for all the help, I'll now start increasing survival again.
