Despawn time

Postby Xcom » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:14 pm

Does anyone know the accurate time it takes for blocks of wood and boards to dispawn on the ground? They seem to stick around longer then most items.

I want to setup a timer on ender to keep track of them to not lose any items when doing some woodworks.

look at the clock -> drop a block -> wait for despawn -> look at the clock.

repeat this three times and take the average or the shortest time to be on the safe side.

if you're building something large and you're trying to gather materials to take to the worksite try using a cart or boat sign to store the boards and blocks...signs never decay so they're the perfect storage device...if you just want to know the time I have no clue

best sign storages:
blocks of wood = palisade conrerpost = 100 = 1space
stone = milestone = 150 = 1space
boards = cart = 20 = 1space

Never been a fan of the hitboxes of carts, cheese racks have a perfect 1 tile hitbox and hold 5 as a nice alternative.

I don't know, just had some issues with getting them aligned well, been a long time though so my memory is starting to fade on this kind of thing.

Was thinking of deforesting an area and rather got sick of picking up blocks of wood every time. I'm very surprised this isn't a common knowledge. I guess I'll do a bit of experimenting with it to figure it out.

Thanks for the tips but I already use it :)

if you don't want the wood, then it doesn't matter.

If you do, leave them as logs until you are ready to pick them up.
Nobody knows because nobody leaves stuff on the ground long enough for it to despawn.

Although straw goes in about 20 minutes (not enough time to harvest, make flour, then pick up the straw)

I was curious to see how long it would take so I wrote a script for checking the despawn time.

The result:
Item name (res): gfx/terobjs/items/wood
Start Time: 11:45:52 (the windows calendar time on my pc)
End Time: 19:54:21
Total time before despawn: Hours: 8 Min: 8 Sec: 29 (add 1 second as it took a sec to drop the item on the ground then start the script)

One other thing to add. I ran the script right before server restart today and the wood did disappear when server went down even if it had only been on the ground for 1h.

I might do future experiments on other items and post it in here.

Just to create a baseline that items despawn always regularly at the same time I tested it on branches.

Name
Start
End
Time

gfx/terobjs/items/branch
Time: 20:45:34
Time: 20:48:55
Hours: 0 Min: 3 Sec: 21

gfx/terobjs/items/branch
Time: 20:51:04
Time: 20:54:26
Hours: 0 Min: 3 Sec: 22

gfx/terobjs/items/branch
Time: 20:57:21
Time: 21:00:42
Hours: 0 Min: 3 Sec: 21
