Prospecting in caves

If I am in a cave system using the Prospecting skill, any metals I find will be in the level below the floor I'm on, right? Is there a way to walk around in a cave system and prospect for metals on the same floor in which I'm walking?

You're right, and no, there isn't. If you want to prospect the first underground level, you will have to do so on the surface.
