Prevent cave-ins?

Hello,
I have finally got acces to a cave where i actually found some ore by randomly mining walls. Im planning on using mine-supports soon but before that i need to collect more ore to smelt them into bars and then nuggets. What i want to do is to mine straight forward into walls with the chance of getting ore. Now when i find some ore i will only then place a mine-support.

Now my question is: How can i mine without causing cave-ins?
