Cap on Quality of ground black pepper?

Postby Cypherz » Tue Sep 25, 2012 11:57 am

Just wonderign if there is a softcap/hardcap on pepper quality that i dont know about.
It doesnt seem to matter what Q dried pepper I use I always end up with Q9 black pepper.

Im currently grinding Q36+ dried pepper dupes on a quern and end up with Q9 black pepper, now i remember when i first made black pepper prob with dupes Q in the high teens range i was still gettting Q8-9 which i put down to the mechanic of Q dropping by half using a quern.

Thanks for the reply.

Im not really sure it belongs in the How Do I section, but i agree it could have gone into the Ask Simple Questions here (But i dislike that page as its not easy to track what is going on there)

I saw that post, but that was in regards to boiling the peppers. Im having a problem with the final step of making black pepper from grinding dried dupes to black pepper.

I see no reason why the Q of the dried pepper would go from Q36 to Q9 from my stats (Cooking 125, per 29, Farming likely to be 1). i'd need to have a combined skillcap of less than 4 in order to get Q9 black pepper. Thats assuming Q36 pepper averaged with softcap of skill before taking into account halving of Q by the quern.

1 farming!

drupe quality is cut in half by quern
36 / 2 = 18

you then softcap your drupes with your farming level
18 + 1 = 19
19 / 2 = 9.5

thats truncated, so you get q9 blackpepper...

so either:
a)use a peppermill and get q18 pepper from q36 drupes
b)raise your farming to 18 and keep using the quern to get q18 pepper from the q36 drupes
c)raise your farming to 36 and use a peppermill to get q36 pepper from q 36 drupes

If you use a peppermill remember the container itself caps pepper grains, so you need one higher Q than the grains. The Q of the wood block and the Q of the bars, both do modify the final Q.
Also the grains placed inside a peppermill will be all as the lowest Q grain you placed in it.

This is different than the peppershaker that averages the black pepper and does not cap its Q. I preffer shakers even with the half cut of the quern, I have not tested the outcome, but I feel they give better FEP gain than mills.

I didnt see it requiring Farming alone for this! I thought it would at least require Cooking.
That clears everything up then. I already started raising Farming after reading the other post about the Q of boiled pepper dupes.

Thanks for all the replies.
