When a character dies, their runestone appears at the character creation room. When you create a new character, you can inherit a small portion of that character's stats and attributes (a lot if you were full tradition belief), their claimed land, and have the option to spawn at their old hearth fire. As a character who has inherited from a previous character, you can sacrifice items through an Ancestral Shrine to gain Numen points (more points are gained the more tradition belief you have). You can also forfeit the current offering to lose some Numen points and get a new offering. Once you have collected a certain amount, you can spend the points on things such as spawning a loaf of bread, or gaining your ancestor's stats additively for combat.

For specifics, look at the wiki.
