how to find big players around you

These politics, alliances
I mean, how to check what big parties are around you, whom to try to make friends with, whom just to stay away from.
And how to know what part of map are you in.
And if there are some smaller players, whom you can just say HI (and who won't run away or disappear)
Most peoples I saw were sleeping. I saw only one alive, and said him "hi", but he was running away and then just disappeared

Guide to find yourself on the map:

Acquire a boat =)
Use Ender's Client or something similar
Travel along the rivers for an hour or so, specifically looking for landmarks such as mountains and unique river intersections
Without ending your game session, open up map.html (it's in the map folder which is in the Ender's folder)
Compare the session map to the world map, focusing on the less common landmarks such as mountains.


Suggestions to meet other players near you:

Strangers will be apprehensive most of the time, but sometimes you can meet people while hunting/foraging.
Place your hearthfire indoors (inside a log cabin, timber house, or stone mansion) before giving out your hearthsecret.
Travel far and wide exploring and learning the neighboring village names.
Look for signs of activity: raw hides on drying racks, stage 1~3 crops, new structures/paving, well-fed livestock.
Perhaps try writing your hearthsecret on a runestone at a neighboring settlement if there are signs of activity.
Or maybe a crate of pies with a note written on parchment
Posting your exact location on the forums is not advised, but it's usually safe enough to mention which of the 25 supergrids you reside in & ask people in that supergrid to kin you.
Remember to erase your hearthsecret before ever placing your hearthfire outdoors.


When first meeting a stranger on haven,
It's polite to talk about: possible trades, ways to help eachother, laggy weather, what they enjoy about the game, who else in the area is active/friendly
It's impolite to ask about: their home coordinates, defenses, quality of their industries, politics, religion, etc

exceptions to the bold part can be made when you're walking around in armor/decent gear and come across a noob in linen clothing...if you don't kill them(which you shouldn't) you're usually giving them advice so its ok to ask stuff like that

but its best not to find the really big people around you, or have them find you since it will usually mean you'll die...
