Does prospecting always search for minerals on the level below you?

Or is there a way to make it act like it used to for searching on your current level for an ore vein?

You scan an area of ground below you, I know the system has changed in past worlds and before those changes you could scan on your same level your toon was standing, but I think not after the changes.
