Obviously its been fixed since then. However someone from W3 will be able to explain it a whole lot better than I did, but that's the gist of it.

That prayer had nothing to do with it, but A.D. might have abused it, though Sodom still had top quality rings. A.D. accused Sodom of "abusing" the effect of tobacco which was to raise pscyhe. Sodom had some allies and pretty much their whole ally network fed some person from Hivemind cavebulbs for Psyche. I believe the person was Miss Emily.
Back then rings were made without gold beaters, so their quality was sqrt(PSY*Smithing) so with enough investment it made Q1300 jewelry, I believe it got so high quality it crashed the server and loftar had to raise the maximum quality limit.
Mines were also just a minehole with an amount of ore so great they were for all practical purposes, unlimited, and weren't connected like they are now. With this unlimited ore, factions could sell gold without much drain to them. There was about 3-4 gold nodes the entire world though.
IIRC there was also a gold node right across the world's border and it caused much butthurt. I believe when the world was expanded the Koreans and A.D. had a fight over it. Or it might have been W4 and since there were no expansions that world it just caused butthurt.
