Hello. I found a quality 22 pickaxe, and I have but 12 STR.

How much do I need to get da ore, assuming I can find that mining hole again? Also, aside from looking for a potential mining hole, prospecting just tells you what's in the mine, right?

Read the wiki on mining, it'll give you comprehensive details on everything you need to do. The short of it is that you want as much strength and the highest quality tool that you can get your hand on. Hardness on cave and mine walls varies based on location due to nodes, so there is no one answer to how much you need.

Prospecting tells you if there is ore 1 z-level below you. Building a minehole will take you to the floor below you.

Overground mineholes are on the same level as caves - but in a cave your have more room for a chance to find / dig for "weak" spots where you can mine with low STR
