You can own a limited number of characters on each account, but you can also have an unlimited amount of accounts so there really is no limit to how many you can have. Once one character has got a hearth fire they can have a hearth secret and that hearth secret can be used for a new character to spawn at that hearth fire (only have a hearth secret when spawning another character or when trading as it is more than possible for people to 'guess' it)

Alt accounts are very important to get anywhere in this game for a number of reasons but particularly:

1. They can be used as 'vaults', keeping your most precious items in their inventory so that when someone demolishes everything in your village and steals everything you only have the bother of needing to rebuild. - the following should be alt-vaulted :
anything you have had to trade to acquire (eg high quality tools)
a selection of your best tree/plant seeds in order to be able to replant
anything that takes a lot of effort to aquire (steel, pearls, gold, etc)
if possible basic restart supplies (enough clay to build a kiln, equipment to make herbalists table, a complete set of tools etc)

2. The game has permadeath, when your character dies you lose an enormous amount of effort that you have expended in creating it and therefore you should as far as possible limit the amount of time/curios/food invested in each character and the best way to do this is to have alts for different tasks each specialising in different statistics. And particularly if you are going to go exploring random areas of the map you should use someone that you don't mind being killed.

So yes, go create alts, lots of them.
