How do I make the game work?

There is a jungle of different answers and questions on this forum, yet I have not found a solution to my issue.

Clicking the play button on the top of the site, downloads a file. This file is not recognized, and I am asked what program to use. I choose Java, and then nothing happens.

Another link randomly tossed somewhere on the forum (can't find the post again, search for issues and you get bombarded) gave me compressed folder. It's called haven-64bit-windows-full, that's really all I know...
I run run.bat and the game starts. I try to log in, but the game is simply stuck on "Authenticating." I was never prompted to allow any application through the firewall, java is allowed though. Havenandhearth is not recognized as an application anywhere. OS is Win 8.

Uninstall and re-install Java http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 80261.html
(x86 bit for 32 bit computers. x64 bit for 64 bit computers)

Make sure you are running the Haven file with Javaw (I think) located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin (or a similar path depending on your computer)

If it still won't work, try using Ender's client viewtopic.php?f=27&t=14575 (the original client really sucks anyways, everybody uses Ender's or a form of it)

At very first make sure you have Java installed properly run this official test: http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

When sure it works, you have to choose "Open with Java Web Start Launcher" after clicking the Play button on top...

I wonder what old client you downloaded? Better go with Ender as Ninijutsu already suggested...if you have problems running Ender post in that thread pls
