How do I become a successful hermit?

Postby englishman » Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:40 am

I'm looking for insight on how to be come a successful hermit (as the title states).

I would like to know the following:
How to find a good place to settle?
What to invest my LP in?
What skills to buy?

And any other insight you might have to offer. Thanks in advance.

A good place to find would be somewhere where there are good hunting grounds, curios, ect. But a good tip is try and stay a little bit inland so that people driving by won't see you on the map and come raid you.
You really should try to get all the skills since it will help benifit you in the future.
And your Lp depends on what you want to do as a hermit. You really most of the skills so you can craft better things. farming, cooking, survival, some explore, and hunting are really good for starting as a hermit. And if you get a mine then invest into some smithing.

okay, ive been a hermit for over 2 years now so i think i should be the one replying to this.
first of all, when you search a place to settle you're just gonna have to try and find some nodes. preferable clay node. water nodes can be nice too. also you might not want to live on low q soil too so keep an eye for that. even more perfect would be to find a cave, but an open cave without claim is very rare, just like any node accually.

as for the lp, you're going to have to spend the lp on practically everything eventually. ofcourse some things can be held for later, like smithing for when you get a mine hole.
you might need to spend your first few lp on exploration and the basic skills. after that you'll nee to think about quality so you wanna raise farming and survival. also unarmed combat can help to defend yourself at leat a bit in this cruel world.

eventually you wanna buy every skill, but just keep it with the basic ones for now, just see for yourself which ones you need when.

and for extra info i recommand you to try to get metal asap. also build an idol for trades as you will need to trade ALOT. Hermits have almost no access to certain thkngs like high q clay, so you'll hve to trade.

good luck living a hermit life! it's a challenge, but a fun one! :)
Hope you have a great day

Is there a certain quality of nodes I should strive for?

as a hermit u need really two characters, 1 for nature and 1 for industry.

best location should always be away from large towns. I know many hermits who settle close to towns and think they at least can have some communication with people, but it's a huge mistake. Village expand claims, and ur pclaim can be removed easily if a large town decides to expand over ur claim, which I've had to do a couple of time when ive told people not to settle outside my walls.

it's unlikely that a hermit will have the best resources out there, especially in this world, the best ones really have already been owned, and it's often best to have good resources, but not the greatest, then trade for things u want to improve q. it means no one will want to fight u for it.

add people to ur kin list to talk to. being a hermit is lonely in this game. I did it all of world 4, but I had a lot of people kinned and lots of people to talk to etc. even If its just for general chatter.

many towns like to help new players and hermits, so ask around and see what you can get in terms of support. U can easily trade things which are forgeable or where q isn't important. such as chantrelles, cave bulbs etc.

and good luck:)

I look for water nodes.
They are less contested by large factions and have a large effect on things relevant to hermits.
A 40+ water node will immediately have an effect on your leather/food/trees.

Soil is second for me. Its useful and plays a large roll in tree farms. However, as a hermit, you will go through less trees than food.
The majority of high quality wood items you will end up buying.

Clay is last. I have died too many times trying to defend my pathetic clay node.
Again, buy it. Should you come across a node 40+ that is unclaimed, consider yourself a lucky SoB and keep very, very quiet about it.

^^ All this is just MY opinion and my logic has holes... which will be pointed out by helpful peeps here vv
