Shield Quality?

I've got a quality 5 shield. I seem to be doing all right against animals, but I have to wonder if shield quality actually matters. It seems to me that the quality of basically every other piece of equipment does matter (especially ones involved in combat). If it does matter, which skill/attribute affects the quality?

Shield quality doesn't affect combat... yet.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.
