What's the best way to find game?

What's the best way to find deer, boars and bears, other than, of course, going afk in the middle of a patch of thick and deserted woods?

Right now I am endlessly cruising the banks of my not too populated area hoping to spot one from my boat and I find it frustrating. As a noob I need to keep my inventory full of stones so my ability to forage while searching is limited, so the twenty minutes I have spent so far calling, "Here piggie, piggie,' into the trees feels like time wasted. Do the experienced or inventive hunters have any suggestions?

just forage with your boat and start chipping stones at the other side of the river when you spot an animal, or just take a chest with stones in your boat

Finding an animal was never that hard with enders client.
Animals very rarely spawn that close to the river shore, but ender provides quite decent area of sight so you can actually see animals more often. Each 30 minute trip I can hunt up to 5 boars, 6 deers (if the herd luckily spawns), 1 bear.

Boars yes, deer sometimes, bears no. One bear every 30 minutes... I call bullshit on that.

Bullshit as well. I forage a LOT. On boat. 1 bear every couple of days, if I'm lucky. Deer, very often. Boars, awfully often.

With my other chars I used to hunt in boat and it was r eally slow, with my new hermit I got a new tactic: I let the gates of my palisade open, atack a boar and run while he follows me. I get in my pali and close the gatse, and hit him. Once he runs you can chase him and shoot, he wont atack most of the time. If he strikes back while you are shooting him in the field run back to the pali and close, they are really slow.

there really aren't enough bears around...someone should start a petition to get more!

If there were more bears around, it'd be a grizzly sight. The horror would be unbearable. We must give paws before implementing such an idea.
