What is the absolute best way to find metal in a cave? Without prospecting or anything.

just at a distance from each other. Not like every sigle tile, leave like 30 tiles in between. Less if you want

Also..
If no rock drops below me, should I keep mining that spot until one does?
A better question I guess, would be.. does the ore drop on the tile I'm mining or, below me, or does it get put into my inventory?

ore goes into your inventory, rocks go on the ground

when you mine a tile and the timer finishes there can be three outcomes.
you can either get stone dropped under your feet, this means there is no node at this spot.
or you can get or in your inventory, this means there is a node at this spot.
or you can get nothing, just keep mining until one of the above comes out.
