Locating a mine in a cave

Postby Sarge » Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:35 pm

I tried searching but couldn't find anything that previously addressed this.

i understand that if you get a successful reading in a cave that the mine might not be in that cave, but actually in another cave - but how do you establish that exactly? Is it the same as above ground?

In 2 seperate examples, I have had successful readings in caves at x%. I then esatblished the direction of the mine through further readings within the cave, but have lead to dead ends before reaching the mine's location each time. All I could find in previous writings was that this means that the mine is in another close by cave.

However, in both cases, I have canvassed huge terrain areas, a couple thousand tiles around these cave entrances (yes, it took a fucking long time) and there are none. So the only conclusion I'm able to draw is that often you will get a reading in a cave and the mine is actually not accessible at all, ie. it is underground locked out from cave access - is this true?

Prospecting doesn't include barriers. It's possible that the mine is nearby, just located in a different cave system.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

There isn't one - so does it mean the mine is not accessaible or is a mine always accessible and I just somehow missed the right cave entrance?

The mines should always be accessible. Of course, it's not as if there isn't even the remotest possibility of a bug in the map generator, but I haven't found any such situations in my ocular inspections of the generated maps, at least.

Possibly.
It's also possible that the correct cave entrance was generated behind a tree, or some other barrier that stopped you from reaching it.

Caves are a lot bigger than you think, I remember when I had to walk under an entire lake just to find an iron mine. I obviously dumped that one though, too much trouble.

OK thanks, I'll keep trying to find it then.

... and a cave entrance will always be on a leading face of a cliff right?

well, does accessible mean you might have to swim? cause there could be a lake in the cave, and you cant see to the other side.

Sarge, I think I found the culprit... take a look at the picture below...

I have placed an arrow pointing at what I believe is a definite outline of a cave entrance. This possible cave entrance was located on the same cliff as the other cave entrance, about 100 or 200 tiles away.

@ BTaylor

I'm pretty sure I found the place in your pic, but I couldn't enter there - did you actually manage to go into a cave there?

No, I wasn't able to get into it but I am almost positive it's a bugged cave entrance of some sort.
