How do I attack animals?

I try to click on bunnies and bears but nothing happens

Don't click on bears. However, buy the "hunting" skill, get as CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to a bunny and RIGHT-click him. Make sure you have 2x2 space in inventory.

Just walk up to the rabbit. Stand directly in front of it and right click it. Should work every time.

You can safely catch rabbits, chicken and rats at the beginning. They don't fight back.
If you want to move on to bigger game, you need a sound strategy and a high combat stat. How high? Well, if you have decent equipment and some cover...

10-15 for an ant.
About 25 for a fox.
30-40 for a muflon or an aurochs (using fences)
40, or better 50 for a boar
Dunnohowmuch for a bear...
....one Chucknorrilion for a Troll.

Seriously speaking, if you see a boar or a bear, turn back and run. They can kill you forever, with one hit.

Or right click it from any distance and drop aggro immediately. You'll still pick it up but it won't run.

I found that out a few days ago and was going to report it as a bug but forgot...seems like its new to W7 because I don't remember it happening W6(probably part of the movement combat nerf?). even if it does run it'll stop when it hits something solid and you'll still walk up and grab it.

Not quite, to get it to stop moving you have to end the combat (The sword and branch icon on top right)

that part was already said...but yes it'll stop and you won't so you'll still grab it!
