How do I do anything (not clueless, just...)?

I'm still rather new and trying to scratch a living, but five times in a row now I've been approached and either hunted down immediately, or told that "you're within a hundred miles of my land, go now or die".

I don't really know what to do, everyone seems out to kill every single new player, and I get that is a part of the game- but being that this is a game I'd like to have some fun too, you know? Your's shouldn't be coming at my expense, and a new player won't be a real threat to those more experienced I'd imagine. So far, all I've been able to do is build some basic amenities, pave out a little spot, fence it, then get killed or chased off by a group of thugs.


So far this community seems as badly managed as that of DayZ, and that while this game is kind of toted for it's community (which is what got me here in the first place, being told that the community was great).

So yes, what do I do?

I didn't come here expecting Farmville. I came her not-expecting DayZ.

And if you can tell me how to build a brick wall within a couple of hours, that'd be great. Thus far I've been getting killed while only an hour or a couple in, or whenever I log in from my spruce brough bed.

Pretty much what Ninjitsu said.
But with one addition. Find a group.
Hermits rarely survive. You've arrived late in the world, and the only way you can carve out a living now it to either join a group, or get a palisade asap, before you are noticed.

Although, if you are killed within an hour or so, you're unlucky. Avoid rivers. if you see someone, don't get out of your boat and be super cautious.

Find a secluded spot in the map, erect a palisade, find a clay node, find an iron node, feed an alt pure strength, mine with him (he might die in the beginning without supports, who cares, str is cheap)
Make an iron production, make wrought iron, make steel
Drain your clay node with a 1 survival alt, making more Q10 bricks than you can imagine
Use your metals and bricks for a brick wall. (build it outside of your palisade, not inside)
This can be done in around 2 weeks.

I doubt he will do it alone in 4 days, I was just being realistic though. If he's a 24/7 no-lifer he can do it in less than 2 weeks.

Thanks, and I usually try to avoid rivers. They're marked with tons of unbuilt campfires anyway.

You could check out my guide. It's a decent start to get you to the point of not starving/being confused to death.

Edit: Me and another guy built a 15k brick wall in 4 days. It killed my soul, never again ><
