Finding spot for well

Postby ainesilver » Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:50 pm

I am using a dowsing rod to find a well location and have not been able to pinpoint the exact spot. How do you read the direction it gives you?
Example: 87 delta 43.

Just follow the pie. Could be ist some screens away still. It will look like a very small pond on the ground.

Make sure you have hide objects on, it could be hiding behind a tree.

For any kind of tracking(dowsing included), best way if you have considerable delta is to track from point a, mark it (put a build sign), move in a 90 degree angle to what your reading direction was for about a screen, track again, traingulate the spot (for extremly high distance tracking you'd have to move more than screen away to see any effect, but that only happens with scents).

As to answer your question specifically, first number is angular direction, second is deviation, so for your given example your target is anywhere between 44(87-43) and 130(87+43) degrees.

If you're using Ender's, there's an option to turn on highlighting dowsing marks. The client keeps them persistent (as long as there isn't a session change such as porting home or entering a door). This is much easier than using signs as it records direction as well as position. Sorry, don't have the client open at the moment and can't recall exactly what the option is.

Thanks for all the help. I found a spot for a well. The arrows were actually pointing AWAY from the well spot.

You have to folow the blunt side of the "arrow". Not the sharp one on which you are standing.
Hope you have a great day

An understandable mistake. Most of the time the pointy end is the direction its directing you to.
