In game currency

Postby AmrothAnarion » Tue Jul 30, 2013 9:34 pm

I am fairly new to H&H, but I wanted some feedback on in-game currency.

There is an existing coinpress/market concept built in to the game, however I have scarcely seen it used.

If some more experienced players could give feedback I would greatly appreciate it.

1) Do you have any success stories from this or previous worlds using coin system? If so how was it managed?

2) What are you own preferred forms of currency? Ie bars of metal, pearls, ect and why?

3) How does the worth of an item vary depending on scenario of trade? IE length of time since world reset, massive cities vs hermit trade, ect?

Thank you for your time!

1) Coins have never managed to work. Only coin that could work is gold, but there's not really enough of it to use as a currency (and if there was its value would drop anyway)

2) Pearls, highquality steel, bulk low q steel, bricks, bluebells, flotsam

These are the basic currencies that are almost unanimously accepted as trade goods in all cities. Bulk steel and bricks stop being accepted in some cases by midworld

3) yes they fluctuate in value over time and depending on supply/demand. pearls and curios hold steady all world in value basically though.

Problem is that anyone can make money from scratch with no ability to discern who made the coins.
If Brodgar for instance decided to make coins with their mark on it, it might work as a common currency.

we don't have the governing tools/control to actually enforce a currency like that other than through utility. Both steel (can these even be made?) and gold coins have potential due to their value being dense enough.

Yes. They can be melted back into bars if you have a stack of 100 coins.

I am not sure i understand. If they can be melted back into bars later, why does who made it matter?

This means that they have no intrinsic value beyond the value of the metal and thus there is no reason to barter in coins versus bartering in other goods. Coins are inherently less valuable for that reason as having a number non-divisible by 100 means that they are stuck as coins.

If a faction had control over coins they could manipulate the value of coins via modern economic knowledge. Inflation and deflation aren't possible on a reasonable scale without some control over printing money.

So, in theory gold coins would be worth about 10 points each at the current rate, if you could actually find someone willing to take it. In fact, they'd probably be worth less, since the trader then has the inconvenience of waiting to get 100 coins of what is so rarely used.

It seems like vending stands were conceived while thinking of local trades where the trader does not have to be online. The drawback, of course, is that if you leave a vending stand outside, you'll have it stolen from.

If idol trading was disbanded and vending stands were not easily vandalised and stolen from, I could see coins becoming a useful trading currency in certain locations. At the same time, that kind of protection for trade isn't really in keeping with game mechanics, since they're mostly about making yourself and your property safe your own damn self.

I'm under the impression 10 coins can be melted into a nugget. But you still need specific amounts before they have ingame utility.
