searched the forum and wiki, and didnt find a hint except that it needs wood...

You need Wheelmaking skill and a ton of lumber.

aside from bugs there's only one danger: If you have swimming turned on and 'leave' your boat, you might end up swimming in the river rather than standing on solid ground. This is why you never buy swimming/ make sure you don't turn it on with hotkeys
