Just wondering what skills are needed to get better quality items for the various parts of the fishing rod, e.g. Branches, Bones, Plant Fibres / Wool and possibly earthworms, if they arent dependant on the soil quality.

To get better quality sticks, you are going to need access to hi-quality trees, which is pretty far up there on tech tree. Or you could trade for them. They should be cheap.
Hi-Q bones come from high level animals. You need to trade or improve combat skills
plant fibers are lower, you just need to get to farming, but it takes time to breed the flax into hi-q stuff.
Hi-q string comes from q10 wool (no way to raise it currently) that is crafted on a hi-q spinning wheel. hi-q spinning wheel needs hi-q wood, like sticks.
earthworms are solely dependent on soil quality
