My friend has dialup...

Postby Ferinex » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:00 am

Does anyone/the admins know how this game will run on dialup? The Java Web Start opens and starts the download of the client, but it seems to hang. We are attempting to just leave it open to see if the download completes, because we read of that working for other people. Do you know if this game will be unplayable on a 56k connection?

Also, is there a way to download the client on another computer and put it on this computer so the Java Web Start doesn't need to download it on a 56k connection?

My friend has played the game a little bit on a dial-up connection. The play button doesn't work because, just like you said, it hangs. However after waiting quite awhile, the download version worked for him. I haven't heard him speak of any lag at all, so I think it runs fun once it is downloaded. Also, updates only download the required files, so the long download only happens once.

Alright, thanks a million for the reply =] I have the downloaded version here and open via external HDD. It's been sitting open for about half an hour, and we're going to leave it overnight to see if it finishes.

Just by the by, when I say that the Web Start says the download has stalled, that is using the version tht you can download from the PAQ page :3

Sorry for the double post, I figure it has been quite a few hours and I have legitimate information and questions to bring forth. :P

We have the haven-res.jar, haven.jar, splash.gif, icon.gif, and haven.jnlp all on her computer now, in a single folder. I attempted to make a .jnlp that launches from that folder using http://127.0.0.1/havenandhearth as the directory, but I get an error. I assume you can not play the game in this way, and you need to use the unedited haven.jnlp downloadable from the PAQ page, Jorb/Loftar. Unfortunately the download hangs when you launch it this way. Since we have the files already downloaded, is there a folder in Java's common files somewhere that we can drop them and have it work?

It is possible to play it that way, but not using JNLP (unless I'm mistaken, the JNLP client uniquely identifies resource files from their URLs, and thus must be used with the real server, unless you h4xx0r around in the JNLP files quite a bit). You may want to see this post for a little more information.

So I am missing a couple of .jar files; I'll be sure to get those. But erm, how do you go about launching it? Is there a way to put a shortcut on your desktop to run it? And do I need to worry about the JOGL libraries? She uses *cringes* Windows Vista. We have the latest Java installed from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en. The offline version if that makes a difference.

Edit: And yes, I have gluegen-rt.jar and jogl.jar now. All of the above question still apply. Thank you =]

Edit2: I thought about the desktop shortcut, and I'm sure you could do it relatively easily with a batch file, so that is a secondary question to the main one; being about what libraries I would need and how I would go about installing them on windows.

Alright, I've resorted to clearing my cache, opening haven and hearth, and then copying the cache over to her computer via external HDD. I'll let you know if it works after I've done it :P
