A few newbie questions, mostly regarding the map

Postby rabek » Fri Sep 27, 2013 1:47 pm

Hi! I tried searching the forums/wiki for what I need to no avail. Apologies if this was covered somewhere.

First, how do you find broadleaf forests? I can find almost exclusively only the other kind. I've found a desert or two, and a lot of moorland, but I can't find the other kind of forest even after about an hour of walking straight westwards.

Second, is there a way to find where you are located on the big map on the wiki? I've tried matching terrain features from several locations, and I just can't find my location.

Third, unrelated to the above, is there a way to install H&H to the harddrive, so I don't have to use the web launcher?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to HnH

1. you need to use a custom client like Ender if you want it on your harddisk (they even store minimaps in a local folder)
http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/vie ... 27&t=14575

2. tips for local maps with custom clients like Ender (made with minimaps in local map folder) - helps in finding yourself on WM (your Coords)
http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/vie ... 27&t=31386

3. the "big map" is only linked at RoBWiki - it's made by Sabinati and Alg and running on Sabinatis server and called "World map"

4. broadleaf forests have a lighter green on minimaps and World map

with these hints you're sure able to answer your other questions

even though i understand how a custom client is more beneficial to players, id still insist to introduce the official one along ;)

(technical questions #4, click the underlined "of course!" to download the official client.)

p.s.
the map is huge. you would probably need to travel further to find different biomes.

i understand your reasoning, borka, but still an official mod should give a new player an official reply of an official client (even as a reference) and a custom download should always be suggested as an optional choice, as devs cannot help with any troubles happened with custom clients. players should choose to use it or not at their own will and risk (as Ender himself is not updating it atm), and mods dont force the choice. (i know you arent forcing, but giving only ender download would give the wrong idea.)

p.s.
you can choose where to install it.

underlined "of course!"
= haven.jnlp
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="http://www.havenandhearth.com/java/" href="haven.jnlp">
  <information>
    <title>Haven and Hearth</title>
    <vendor>Seatribe</vendor>
    <homepage href="http://www.havenandhearth.com/" />
    <description>The Haven game</description>
    <icon href="icon.gif" />
    <icon href="splash.gif" kind="splash" />
    <shortcut online="false">
      <desktop />
      <menu submenu="Haven and Hearth" />
    </shortcut>
  </information>
  <security>
    <all-permissions />
  </security>
  <resources>
    <j2se version="1.5+" max-heap-size="256M" />
    <jar href="haven.jar" />
    <jar href="haven-res.jar" />
    <property name="haven.errorhandler" value="on" />
    <property name="haven.errorurl" value="http://www.havenandhearth.com/java/error" />
    <property name="haven.defserv" value="moltke.seatribe.se" />
    <property name="haven.fullscreen" value="off" />
    <extension name="jogl" href="http://www.havenandhearth.com/java/jogl/jogl.jnlp" />
  </resources>
  <application-desc />
</jnlp>

The only thing you'll get is that haven.jnlp that gets dropped where you saved it to, you "Java Web Start Launch" it and stuff gets downloaded and stored somewhere (Java Cache and .haven folder) - nothing gets "installed" - it doesn't work much different from Play Button (autohaven.jnlp) and most of all you don't get maps saved or much worse: not having a resizeable minimap window (sure you can make screenshots of default clients minimap and stitch them manually - i did that way when i started... )

(Sure there are ways to make somekind of installation from that but before i'm going to waste time to tell people how to scratch and sample that stuff on different OSses and answering all questions arousing from that i'd better answer Ender related questions ;) )

OP asked for "optional choice" ;)

no, borka, that is just your personal reason to recommend a custom client. when it doesnt get downloaded as you wish, that is the issue for the devs and you are supposed to talk to them about it ;) and maps were officially not meant to be saved on your computer. you are only talking about the convenience, and not an official reply new players actually need to know. dont give them a wrong idea as if devs could willingly solve problems with the custom clients.
anyways, im not blaming you for not offering the "official" info, im telling you why i felt the need to post it since you didnt as a mod.

@ OP: Just dl Enders from the provided links, the default client sucks ass.

Check out the the shortcut keys soon as you can, it has some very useful features like,

switching to permanent light, even in caves with Ctrl-n
clicking and dragging an area to check sizes etc with Ctrl-g (grid) and Ctrl-l
hide and unhide objects (go to the options tab and select what should eb affected and what not) with Ctrl-h

simplified crops to reduce lag with massive flax fields, hostile PvE aggro radius etc etc
