Mining..?

Im having trouble grasping the idea of mining, Ive read that you NEED a pick to start mining, but then how would you get the metal to make the pick?
Unless there was some given out/lying around near the start of H&H that have been circulated and growth took affect...

You don't need a pick axe to mine, you can mine with a stone axe.
