Best bait for catching perch?

What kind of bait should I try for catching perch, or is there a lure that you have found successful?

I've tried worms on advice but all I get is brill...

It's important where you fish. I use a pinecone plug if I don't have worms, and get perch 100% of the time. Just make sure your lure lands in deep water. I'm also using a bone hook and plant fibers. I don't know if that last bit actually matters though.

Thanks. Probably the problem is then my fishing spot. I've only been trying one river.

from the river, you can throw your hook into deep water (where you have to swim), or use a boat.
